Confirmed: Whitley Bay's parade is 3pm on Sunday 8 November at The Links, with roads shut from 2.15pm. The council's 2026 order lists all eight borough events.
Whitley Bay’s Remembrance Sunday parade is at 3pm on Sunday 8 November 2026 at The Links, behind a rolling road closure from 2.15pm. North Tyneside Council has now made its 2026 traffic order for the borough’s parades, and it confirms the date, the afternoon time and the route.
Updated 3 October: the council’s 2026 order is out. It confirms every parade for Sunday 8 November, adds The Links to Whitley Bay’s closure route, and moves Wallsend’s start and finish to the Town Hall.
Armistice Day is the following Wednesday 11 November, when Killingworth holds its civic service.
Is it on this year
Yes. The council’s notice, North Tyneside Remembrance Parades: Temporary Prohibition of Traffic Order 2026, dated 15 September 2026, says the order would be made on 22 September 2026. It sets out six Sunday parades, a Sunday service at Shiremoor and the Killingworth civic service on the Wednesday. It is earlier than last year, when the order was advertised on 9 October.
The 2026 parades, times and closures
All from the council’s 2026 order. The time is the service time at the memorial.
| Where | Service point | Time | Roads closed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whitley Bay | The Links | 3pm | Rolling closure from 2.15pm along Station Road, Victoria Terrace, Whitley Road, Park Avenue, Marine Avenue, The Links and Watts Slope, until 3pm |
| North Shields | Hawkeys Lane | 10.55am | Rolling closure from 10am along Hawkeys Lane until 12pm; Hawkeys Lane at its junction with Lansdowne Terrace and Spring Gardens shut 8am to 12pm |
| Tynemouth | War memorial, Village Green | 11am | Rolling closure from 10.15am on Manor Road and Huntingdon Place, between Front Street and the Percy Park Road junction, until 11.35am; Manor Road and Front Street shut from 11.35am to about 12pm for the service |
| Wallsend | Burn Close war memorial | 11am | Rolling closure from 10.30am along Richardson Street, High Street East, Church Bank, St Peters Road, Burn Bank and Archer Street, returning to Wallsend Town Hall at 12pm |
| Forest Hall | Forest Hall Institute Club (Longbenton district parade) | 11am | Rolling closure from 10.20am along Crescent Way North, Forest Hall Road, Station Road and Station Road North, until 11.15am |
| Wideopen | Wideopen Squadron Air Training Corps | 10.55am | Rolling closure from 10.30am along Great North Road and Bridge Street to the Seaton Burn war memorial, back at St Columba’s Church by 11.30am |
| Shiremoor | Earsdon Road (service, no parade) | 11am | Earsdon Road at the Lesbury Avenue junction shut 10.45am to 11.30am |
The order adds that there are no alternative routes for any of the parades, so plan to be parked, or past the route, before the closure starts.
Last year the council’s release said: “All events are free and open to all.” The 2026 release has not been published yet.
What changed from last year
- Whitley Bay: same 3pm time and the same streets, with The Links now named in the closure route as well.
- Tynemouth: Front Street now closes for the service alongside Manor Road, and the rolling closure is defined from Front Street.
- Wallsend: the parade now uses Richardson Street, High Street East and Church Bank and returns to Wallsend Town Hall; last year it started and finished at Hadrian Leisure Centre.
- Wideopen: the route is described as Great North Road and Bridge Street.
- The other times are unchanged from 2025.
The Whitley Bay time is the one people get wrong
Almost every remembrance parade in the country steps off in time for the eleven o’clock silence. Whitley Bay’s does not: it is 3pm at The Links, with closures from 2.15pm, as it was last year.
If you want the silence at 11am you need Tynemouth, Wallsend, Shiremoor or Forest Hall. If you want your own town’s parade, it is the afternoon.
Armistice Day, Wednesday 11 November
Killingworth has no procession. The order sets out a civic service of remembrance at the post-1945 jigsaw memorial at the White Swan Centre at 11am on Wednesday 11 November, followed by the laying of wreaths and remembrance crosses.
Parking, and why the fireworks trick does not work here
The charged council car parks on The Links are metered 9am to 6pm only, which makes the 7pm fireworks display a week earlier free to park for. A 3pm parade is not. Bournemouth Gardens and Dukes Walk are inside charging hours at three in the afternoon and cost £1.20 an hour.
Brierdene, NE26 4NF, and Waves, NE26 1TQ, are free at all times, but Brierdene keeps a four-hour maximum stay all day, so the free option is not unlimited. Full tariffs and the free car parks away from the seafront are on our Whitley Bay parking page.
The closures are rolling, which means the road opens behind the parade rather than being shut all afternoon, but Watts Slope, Marine Avenue and The Links are the exact streets people park on for the seafront.
What is still to come
- The council’s 2026 news release, which last year added the order of service detail and landed on 27 October.
- Any change to the order before the day. If one is advertised it will also appear on our roadworks and travel page.
The North Tyneside fireworks display is on The Links a week earlier, on Sunday 1 November, and is a separate event with its own arrangements.
